About Kate
I’ve been singing my whole life long. From learning folk songs by the campfire with my family, to joining every choir and school musical I could weasel my way into, singing has always brought me huge joy. It has also carried me through challenging times, from singing songs to comfort me in sadness to singing my guts out with my bestie to get through long canoe portages to singing seemingly endless lullabies to soothe my sweet colicky babies and keep myself somewhat sane along the way!
Like many people, my relationship with my own voice has had its ups and downs. I still remember hearing my voice on a tape recorder as a kid and bursting into tears—it’s amazing how vulnerable it can feel! For years, I didn’t think of myself as a “good enough” singer to take music more seriously as an adult. I never mastered reading music, and despite trying to learn a bunch of instruments, none really stuck—though I am slowly learning the banjo now, and I love it!
Still, my love for music has always found a way to shine through. As a theatre creator, I co-wrote and performed in musicals for families with my theatre company, Shrimp Magnet, and I’m also one-third of the electro-pop kids’ band, The Space Chums. For some reason, singing for kids always felt like a safe space for me to let go and sing freely.
Now, as a second-year student at The CREATE Institute, training to become an Expressive Arts Therapist, I’m gaining a deeper appreciation for the power of music. Singing has a profound ability to soothe, co-regulate, build resilience, and foster connection. It’s something we often feel instinctively, but learning the psychological foundations behind it is incredibly inspiring.
I spent years searching for a choir to join as an adult but found that many were either too performance-focused or too formal. A song circle I joined with my babies was fun, but it didn’t quite fulfill my desire for uplifting, beautiful songs that could replenish my own spirit.
When I discovered Singing Mamas, it felt like everything I had been looking for. It offers the magic of community—a lifeline for me as a young mom—while being enriching and inclusive for little ones. Most importantly, it’s something for YOU as a mother, not just for your kids. This transformative trinity—community, inclusivity, and self-nourishment—is at the heart of Singing Mamas, and I’m so excited to bring it to women in my community.
