What to expect from a Singing Mamas group
Singing Mamas is a special space designed for women to nurture their souls, connect with others, and build confidence in their voices. We sing joyful, easy-to-learn songs that you can carry into your daily life, helping you feel grounded, replenished, and whole. By singing together, we break the isolation many moms experience, fostering a deep sense of belonging and community. This group is open to women of all ages, stages, and life phases—whether you’re a singer, non-singer, or shy singer. The focus is on YOU, and the goal is simple: to get women singing and feeling good.
During sessions, a leader will guide the group through songs line by line, and soon everyone will know them by heart. The atmosphere is fun and supportive, with tea, snacks, and space for little ones to play as the women unwind and harmonize.
What is Singing Mamas?
Singing Mamas is a global movement and non-profit founded in England, made up of midwives, nurses, musicians, teachers, doulas, mothers and community workers who are all committed to improving the wellbeing of women through singing. Founded by Kate Valentine, a registered nurse, Singing Mamas is rooted in clinically proven, scientific research showing that group-singing improves mental health, boosts our mood, and reduces symptoms of postpartum depression faster than the usual forms of treatment.
With over 100 singing groups globally, Singing Mamas is spreading far and wide, delivering singing groups to thousands of women. Our groups in Toronto will be Toronto’s first Singing Mamas group, and Canada’s third! We are so excited to be part of the movement. Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never sung in a group before. Is that okay?
Yes, absolutely! Our songs are learned by ear, following the oral tradition of call-and-response. Simply put, you just repeat after me. No prior singing experience is needed.
What kind of songs will we sing?
At Singing Mamas, we focus on songs that nourish the soul, lift the spirit, and provide support on life’s journey. These are simple, “don’t make me think” songs that help us move from our heads into our bodies, allowing us to deeply experience the joy and power of singing together.
Can I join if I don’t have children?
Yes, definitely! Our main focus is on supporting women’s wellbeing through community singing, our space is open to all who identify as women, whether or not they have children. We welcome non-binary individuals who feel comfortable in a woman-centered space. To learn more about our inclusivity, click here.
How should I prepare for the sessions?
There’s nothing to prepare, practice, or rehearse! Just come as you are. Whether you’re feeling tired, energized, or anywhere in between, you’re welcome exactly as you are.
What is the commitment?
We ask participants to commit to a full session, so that we can build community and our trove of songs. We offer a free “taster” session to any first time joiners and we are happy to prorate anyone who joins after the session has begun.
What if I’m running late?
There is no such thing as “late” in Singing Mamas. While we always start singing at 10, we know exactly how challenging getting places with little ones can be, so we welcome you whenever you can make it.
